A Cloud With A Silver Lining
Those who live in this very dry region of the world covet what natural water they can get, and much of the water that fed the Dead Sea years ago has now been diverted to irrigate crops and provide drinking water. Consequently, the Dead Sea’s water level has been declining by more than 3.3 feet (one meter) a year, creating environmental problems that include sinkholes and receding seashores.
“The Red Sea/Dead Sea Water Conveyance Project” is a joint effort by Jordan and Israel to pipe water from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea. The water will be desalinized in Jordan, and the salt “brine” will pipe 125 miles (200km) north to the Dead Sea. This is expected to stabilize and alleviate evaporation of the Dead Sea as well as provide additional water to an area of the world without an abundant natural supply.
The fortunate by-product of this effort is that a restored, healthy, Dead Sea will protect and create jobs in the Sea’s brisk tourism and commercial businesses – including access to a plentiful supply of the minerals that make Dolmen products exceptional.
